ASSUMPTION THEATRE GUILD

Our 30 Year History

by Susan Babjack
From 1975 through 1979, our Assumption Choirs and Christian Mothers Association presented various small productions and musical revues.  Through these endeavors, John Romeri, our former church organist and choirmaster, along with Larry Wintersteller, a member of our parish and owner of Maier’s Costume Company, realized our parish not only had tremendous talent but also had enthusiastic audiences.  Thus, came the idea of yearly musical productions on a larger scale. With the support and cooperation of our pastor, Fr. James McBride, our parish organization, Assumption Theatre Guild was formed. The Sound of Music was chosen for the first production in 1980.

Over the past 30 years, we have spread our wings.  Along with our yearly musical productions, we have produced Christmas and Lenten shows, performed at community and parish festivals along with sponsoring face painting and puppet shows.  In the fall of 1988, we presented a musical review Stop the Show; in 1989 we sponsored a Masquerade Mystery Ball, and in 2002 we produced A Centennial Celebration in Song.  From our proceeds, electrical wiring, stage lighting, a new stage floor, stage curtain, steps, velour curtains, 100 chairs, and racks have been purchased and installed in McGovern Hall. Theatre Guild has made donations to our church, school and St. Vincent DePaul Society.

Hundreds of people of all ages and walks of life have been involved, both on stage and behind the scenes, including three of our parish priests.  ATG is famous for entire families working together (children/parents on stage together, or parents helping with technical or administrative support).  Several marriages have resulted!  ATG members not only become parish members, but some also join our choir.  One of our greatest accomplishments is introducing theatre arts to those who might never have had such an experience, particularly our children.  They make memories that they will cherish throughout their lifetime.  Some of our members have gone on to perform or produce and direct throughout the Pittsburgh area, even on Broadway.  Sadly, we have a number of deceased members, but we’re sure they’re producing heavenly musicals.  Our biggest supporter and co-founder, Fr. James McBride, is sharing our pride in spirit.

We have been truly blessed these past 30 years with continued cooperation of our pastors, Fr. John Gallagher, Fr. Robert Boyle and Fr. Dennis Buranosky along with the parish pastoral councils.  Another vital part of our guild are all of the generous contributors and advertisers.  To all of them, we give our sincere thanks.

Finally, the most important part of any theatre guild, are the wonderful audiences who have given us support through their presence and appreciation.  We invite each one of you to join the Guild; we especially encourage family memberships.  The Guild is open to everyone interested in any facet of the theatre.  Notices of meetings, auditions, and upcoming projects will be announced in church bulletins and local papers.

We are very pleased to be your Assumption Theatre Guild, and we look forward to learning about your interest in the theatre, your suggestions, and your involvement in the future.

All are invited to join the Assumption Theater Guild.  Those having an interest in theatrical arts are encouraged to explore that desire and actively participate in the Guild as an actor, musician, set and stage crew member, or in one of the many opportunities available as a member of the production staff.  For additional information about becoming an ATG member, send a request to joyousj5@msn.com  Become a fan of ATG on Facebook!
